When hardware engineers select passive crystal resonators for electronic designs, many only check nominal frequency and package size. Missing other critical parameters often causes unexpected timing errors, oscillation failure and field malfunction. This technical guide from Saisi explains core specifications you must define when specifying passive XTAL.
1. Nominal Frequency. This is target resonant frequency, such as 32.768kHz for RTC, or 12MHz,16MHz for MCU main clock. Always confirm required frequency with your chip reference manual. Saisi covers full frequency range from kHz tuning-fork crystals to MHz fundamental-mode crystals.
2. Load Capacitance (CL). This is the most commonly misunderstood parameter. Passive crystal oscillates at target frequency only with matched CL value. Mismatched CL will create frequency offset. CL value must match MCU/RTC datasheet requirement. Saisi provides multiple CL options for every frequency grade.
3. Frequency Tolerance & Temperature Stability. Tolerance means maximum frequency deviation at 25°C, while stability describes drift across operating temperature range. Select ±10ppm for high precision requirement, ±20~±50ppm for general consumer and IoT products. Saisi provides multiple grade options.
4. Equivalent Series Resistance (ESR). ESR represents energy loss inside crystal. Higher ESR makes startup harder, especially at low voltage and low drive level. For battery-powered low-power systems, low ESR crystal is strongly recommended. Saisi controls ESR tightly in manufacturing and marks maximum ESR in datasheet.
5. Operating Temperature Range. Standard commercial grade is -20~+70°C; industrial grade covers -40~+85°C, and extended rugged grade reaches -55~+125°C. Never use commercial grade crystals for outdoor or industrial equipment.
6. Package Type. Choose SMD tape-and-reel for automatic SMT, HC-49 through-hole for manual assembly or low-volume products. Package size also decides PCB footprint and mechanical robustness.
7. Aging Rate. Long-term frequency drift over years. Critical for meters and devices requiring multi-year maintenance-free operation. Saisi controls low aging rate for RTC and industrial crystals.
Saisi technical support team helps customers review component specification before BOM freeze. Many customers send their MCU and circuit design to us for parameter validation before sample order, avoiding costly PCB revision after prototype.
We also remind designers about drive level limit. Over-driving passive crystal will accelerate aging and shorten service life. Our application note introduces how to limit drive power via external resistor.
If you are preparing BOM specification and need support defining passive crystal parameters, Saisi engineers can review your requirement and recommend proper XTAL model, with datasheet and sample support.
