When selecting crystals, frequency is only the baseline requirement. Package footprint determines PCB space, stack height, SMT process compatibility and shock reliability. Many hardware teams fixate solely on frequency at early selection stages and discover package incompatibility after layout, forcing schematic and board revisions, extending schedules and adding unnecessary expense. Saisi has built a comprehensive package ecosystem around 32.768 kHz, 10 MHz, 100 MHz and corresponding TCXOs, delivering flexible timing solutions for different product form factors.
For 32.768 kHz products, Saisi provides well-established packages: 7015 cylindrical SMD, 3215, 2012, 1610 ultra-small SMD and traditional through-hole cylinders. The 7015 cylindrical SMD is widely deployed thanks to strong mechanical stability and consistent pick-and-place yield. 2012 and 1610 miniature packages minimize board occupation for thin sensor modules. Through-hole versions support drop-in replacement for legacy hardware without SMT process modification. Package size correlates with ESR and shock tolerance. Smaller packages use thinner wafers and demand stricter screening. Saisi applies separate reliability screening for miniature packages to reduce field failure risk.
10 MHz and 100 MHz active oscillators and TCXOs mainly adopt 3225, 2520 and 2016 SMD formats. 3225 remains the universal workhorse with balanced cost, vibration resistance and easy assembly, preferred for industrial boards, test equipment and communication cards. 2520 is a mid-size compact option balancing performance and volume for portable devices and RF modules. 2016 ultra-small packages target highly integrated compact cards. High-stability TCXOs sometimes use slightly larger packages to accommodate compensation circuitry and preserve wide-temperature accuracy. Pin-compatible alternatives across packages reduce redesign effort.
There is no universally optimal package. Selection must align with operating conditions. Equipment exposed to heavy industrial vibration favors larger, mechanically robust packages such as 3225. Thin, space-constrained modules may adopt 2016 or 1610. Units deployed in humid environments can be specified with enhanced hermetic sealing upon request. Saisi provides detailed mechanical drawings, pad definitions and maximum thickness specifications for every package to help engineers build PCB libraries in advance.
Most boards combine multiple crystal types: low-frequency 32.768 kHz crystals, 10 MHz reference oscillators, 100 MHz high-speed oscillators and TCXOs at precision-critical nodes. Saisi’s one-stop offering unifies sampling, documentation and technical review to evaluate electrical trade-offs introduced by package selection and avoid pitfalls including high ESR and insufficient shock resistance. Careful package selection paired with matched electrical specifications enables stable clock performance within limited PCB area, balancing size, cost and long-term reliability.
