A rubidium atomic clock (referred to as rubidium clock) is a high-precision time-measuring instrument that adopts the electromagnetic spectral lines of rubidium atoms as the frequency standard for precise timekeeping. It mainly consists of a rubidium quantum unit and a voltage-controlled crystal oscillator (VCXO). With the application of frequency multiplication, frequency synthesis and other technologies, it enables high-precision time measurement.

Basic Principles

The core operating principle of a rubidium atomic clock lies in the energy level transition of rubidium atoms. Specifically, when absorbing or releasing energy, rubidium atoms transition from one energy level to another, emitting or absorbing electromagnetic waves at a specific frequency during the process. The rubidium clock determines time by detecting these specific electromagnetic wave frequencies. When the microwave frequency matches the transition frequency of rubidium atoms, an error signal is generated. This signal is fed back to the voltage-controlled crystal oscillator to adjust its frequency and lock it to the transition frequency of rubidium atoms. This mechanism ensures extremely high stability and accuracy of the frequency output by the crystal oscillator.

A rubidium clock comprises multiple basic modules, including a single-chip microcomputer circuit, servo circuit, microwave frequency multiplication circuit, and frequency modulation and synthesis circuit. The transition frequency between the ground-state hyperfine energy levels of rubidium atoms is 6834.682614 MHz. By servo-controlling the crystal oscillator frequency through a phase-locked loop, the excitation signal frequency is locked to the atomic transition frequency, achieving highly stable and accurate frequency output from the crystal oscillator.

Characteristics and Application Fields

Rubidium clocks feature high short-term stability, compact size and superior precision. Their accuracy is typically on the order of ±5×10, and the maximum short-term stability can reach 10. Benefiting from these advantages, rubidium clocks are widely applied in scientific research and measurement, production and manufacturing, radio and television, power systems and other fields. For instance, they can provide high-precision reference sources for measurement, serve as external time bases for measuring and calibration instruments, and support systems requiring high-precision time synchronization, such as communication base stations and financial networks.
